Consumers see green.

All business needs to grow. Does it matter how you grow? Well according to a very important group it does. Consumers, and they could be YOUR customers, believe it is very important. Grey Global's 'Eye on Australia 2008', shows people want to see companies doing the right thing. Eighty seven percent say companies should tell people what they are doing about the environment. That's up 8% from the 2007 Survey.  It is now apparent that people are not just interested in what you do or sell, but how and why you do it. They're looking at you kid! 68% are interested to know about a company's environmental policy and 68% say they are more likely to trust a company that looks after the environment. This compares to just 30% who say they are more likely to trust a company that supports charities. Overall, 53% of all Australians see the environment as second only to the economy as one of the biggest issues facing our nation in the next five years.

The colour of money

What is business doing about this rapidly growing consumer sentiment? We are seeing a significant change in the way businesses think with regards to growth. Sustainability is the new catch-cry that is fast becoming more than just a term. We now look at the way we design, produce, market and sell products and services. Around the world, businesses have quickly gone from a defensive to a proactively green and clean attitude. More and more companies consider the consequences of finite natural resources, climate change effects, impacts of emissions to air, water and soil and implications of unethical business behavior in their business models. This new way of acting in business becomes embedded in value propositions to consumers and competitive advantage gains follow. Sustainability, once a visionary idea, is now becoming mainstream business. The big corporations understand the value of sustainability and now small business is catching on. Sustainable business practice will soon become an essential part of daily operations for most small businesses.

Macarthur First

South west Sydney is leading the way in small business sustainability through the Symmetry Sustainable Business program.  Almost thirty businesses have entered the Symmetry Sustainable Business program since our first workshop in early April. Our participants know that a good environment is smart business.
