Solid waste Management

Paying for what you don't want!

At odds with conventional user pays thinking, here is a case of paying more for what you are not using.  As of 1st July 2008, charges for disposal of commercial waste will increase by up to 33.92% for local businesses. This will bring the cost for some services in Macarthur and Liverpool up to $165 per tonne.

The increase is being driven by two factors.  Firstly, the changes at WSN's Jack's Gully Waste Management facility means many local waste service providers will now transport your waste to WSN's Eastern Creek landfill site. Secondly the Department of Environment and Climate Change Section 88 levy has a scheduled increase on July 1 of 21%.

Under section 88 of the Protection of the Environment Operations (POEO) Act 1997, licensed waste facilities are required to pay a contribution in respect of all waste received at the facility. The details and calculation of the waste and environment levy that is payable by licensed waste facilities is set out in the POEO (Waste) Regulation 2005. The levy aims to reduce the amount of waste being disposed of, and promote recycling and resource recovery, by providing exemptions and deductions. Deductions from the levy provide facilities with an incentive to drive potential resource recovery and recycling alternatives. This levy and associated costs are passed on to business and consumers.

This is a great time for all small business to consider ways of not only reducing waste generated but minimizing the use of materials coming into the business that cannot be reused or recycled. Now is also the time to start monitoring solid waste in your business. Monitoring is the starting point for managing and improving. There is no business case for paying for what you don't want.  Remember, refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle.
