Drive down your lighting

The traditional incandescent lights are inefficient with as much as 90% of energy being lost in waste heat. They consequently generate more CO2 emissions. By contrast fluorescents and LED lights (Light Emitting Diodes) are not only more energy efficient but they also last longer than traditional lights because they generate less heat. There is also a financial saving to be had.

Businesses can reduce their cost of energy and reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by taking a strategic approach to illumination. This involves use of natural daylight, more efficient technology and better work practices. Incorporating an efficient lighting strategy early in the design phase of the building is often found to be more efficient than remedial fixes through retrofitting which can be quite expensive.

What can you do about lighting?

  • Use efficient LED or fluorescent lights.
  • Use timers and sensors.
  • Use natural light/sky lights.
  • Switch off lights when illumination is not required.
  • Use solar garden lights in place of traditional outdoor lights.
