Sustainability Awards for Mount Annan Buildings

The Bowden Centre at Mount Annan Botanic Gardens, opened in May 2007, is a modern structure, with its winged roofline and clever design.  Its sensitive, environmental design incorporates such elements as natural cross flow ventilation; timber and joinery elements from certified sustainable sources; separation of waste water and harvesting of rainwater for irrigation and toilet flushing; use of low voc emitting materials; and placement of windows to maximize light and interaction with the external, natural bushland setting.

Since it's opening in May 2007 the Bowen Centre has won a number of awards.

In November 2007 the Bowden Centre won the Best Small Commercial Building Award at the inaugural BPN/Environ Sustainability Awards in Sydney.  The Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living also received an award for the best Community Building.

And less than one month later Kennedy Associates received two other prized awards:  The Timber Design Awards.  The building received a highly commended award for Environmental Commitment as well as highly commended for Best Use of Plywood and LVL.

But it was in July this year that the Bowden Centre received its greatest accolade so far.  The top award of the Royal Australian Institute of Architecture, NSW Chapter, the Sulman Award for Public Architecture was presented to the Bowden Centre at Mount Annan Botanic Gardens.

The Bowden Centre is now nominated for the Royal Australian Institute of Architecture National Architecture Awards (Australia’s most prestigious annual architecture awards) to be announced on 30 October 2008.
